Man Overboard

One day as we had gotten on board the “Sampan” to head back to Sand Island, the boat backed away from the pier, the boatswain pulled in the line, and when the boat swung around to head out the boatswain had both feet fly out from under him an into the drink he went!! I won’t name him, but he and I went to Midway on the Natchaug in ’57. We all yelled “Man Overboard!” and went back and got a thoroughly soaked and embarrassed boatswain out of the drink!

Now don’t go getting technical over the “Sampan.” It was not a sampan but that is what everyone referred to it as. Always wondered what happened to that old boat, probably a fish habitat offshore!

  1. By the time I got there in ‘68 we had an old, rusty landing craft to ferry us back and forth to/from Sand Is. where we lived in the
    baracks.
