The Australian Ironwood Tree and Palm Trees are found on most Pacific islands. Seeds from the Ironwood Trees float and have planted themselves onto the shorelines. Coconuts, from Coconut Palm Trees also float and have planted themselves along the shorelines of Pacific islands for more than a thousand years. However, at Midway the Cable Company documented bringing Australian Ironwood Trees to the island. For this reason, the US Fish and Wildlife Service has declared the Ironwood Trees as non-indigenous. The USFWS has opted to remove ALL Trees from Sand Island. Trees were killed by the USFWS by first banding the trees. The dead trees were then left standing and snared many Albatrosses. On Sand Island, the USFWS opted to remove most Ironwood and some Palm Trees.
